Do you like playing World of Warcraft when you have free time? I am sure most of you will said yes. World of Warcraft have been found many years, till now there are billions of people who join this group. Today I have read one article that said his own stories about the time playing WoW. And I'm sure there are large casual guilds out there with an active roster but nothing can compare to a group of 40 and now 25 real life people having to cooperate within the same circumstances in the game to achieve certain goals.
Back in vanilla WoW I was coming home from school, logging into the game and spending six hours a night four nights a week with these people sharing jokes, failures, success, and real life drama. Not to mention the countless off hours in guild chat communicating while doing tasks in the game or just chatting while around the computer. It got to a point where I spent way more time with my guild mates than I ever did with my friends in real life, this may sound weird to a non-gamer but I was totally fine that that. Girlfriends came and went but my guild was always there for me, to laugh at my awkward social failures in approaching women, to listen to all of the problems I faced as a teenager when my real friends would've just cracked jokes or laughed at me.
This may sound crazy but I was closer to that core group of raiders than I ever was with my social click in high school excluding my best friends. Some guild-members were semi-local they lived about a 10-15 minutes away so they actually came to the game retailer I worked at during the release of Burning Crusade for the midnight launch and un-like any awkward Myspace hookup or what some might think an Internet meet-up was like I was actually ecstatic when they showed up.
Re-rolling from alliance to horde after the Burning Crusade hit to play with some newly met real life friends and co-workers kind of broke my heart. I missed all of the friends I've made through the long nights spent grinding boring bosses in Molten Core all the way to being at the bleeding edge of our servers progressing being the first to clear the Spider Wing in Naxxaramas.
I think above being a game WoW has had this amazing affect on the gaming community of bringing people together. Not only were gamers tackling challenging and fun in game tasks similar to any fantasy role playing game they were doing it together within a casual accessible platform unlike the daunting Everquest. Wow has shown me that I'm not alone in my crazy gaming habits and odd cultural tastes, I'm not the only college kid out there that would easily toss up a night of partying and drinking for a nice dungeon with my nerdy yet equally socially deviant online friends.
Hopefully as World of Warcraft becomes more renown and games more socially acceptable hardcore gamers will no longer be looked at as shut-ins that are socially incompetent, then again with my fantastic hair and priceless smile I'm already turning that stereotype upside down. How do you think?
